E-Waste & its Negative Effects on the Environment
E-Waste is also known as electronic waste, is an electronic product or product containing electronic components that have come towards the end of their “useful life”. Electronic devices contain toxic substances – therefore they must be handled with care when no longer needed. If you do not need the product and think it’s outdated, consumers can donate it to someone who needs it. Suppose if the product is broken and not reusable, it is advisable to give it to a certified e-waste recycler instead of throwing it in the garbage.
E-waste in recent years has affected the health of humans and also it has negative effects on the environment. E-waste includes electronic scrap like computers, televisions, printers, cellphones, batteries, etc. Anything that runs on electricity that you’ve decided to get rid of. These devices contain harmful chemicals like mercury, lead, beryllium, etc. When these chemicals end up in our soil, air, and water, it affects the environment. E-waste has negative effects on three major pillars of the environment: air, water & soil.
Negative Effects on Air: Metals like copper, aluminum, and steel are burnt in the open air under very low temperatures. They release hazardous gases into the atmosphere and are blown away by the wind for thousands of miles. When e-waste is disposed of at the landfill and burned, it releases hydrocarbons into the atmosphere which is also a contributor to global warming.
Negative Effects on Water: E-waste like phones and batteries when disposed of improperly leads to toxins entering groundwater. Heavy metals like lead, mercury, and lithium are found in phones and when they are disposed of in a landfill, they can leak into the soil which eventually reaches the groundwaters. After reaching the groundwater, they make their way into streams, ponds, and lakes. As many animals rely on these channels for nourishment, they can get sick if consumed.
Negative Effects on Soil: The soil is polluted when it comes in direct contact or indirect contact with heavy metals like lead, cadmium, and arsenic. These pollutants can remain in the soil and can be harmful to microorganisms in the soil and plants. As we know animals and wildlife who rely on nature for survival will end up consuming affect plants, causing health problems.
